Piggy Back Rides In The Brokenness

Posted by Team Leader on

Today was day one at the work sites, and my group voulenteered at Salvation Army South, which is a day care or summer camp program for the children in the community, and to be completely honest I was overall blown away. Most of these kids were from broken homes and families, but at the end of the day, what we found was that all they needed was some extra lovin'. They were very short tempered and emotional, and a lot of them wore their hearts on their sleeves. They didn't hold back anything and sometimes it was a lot to handle. My group was the 6-8 year olds. Normally I'm really good with kids but today I got to exprience a whole different environment. These kids were difficult, but if you gave them the attention they all wanted and needed it wasn't so hard after all. I probably gave more piggy back rides than I can count, and my hair was knotted after all the hands that were collectively braiding it, but in the end it was all worth it. Some of these kids don't get that kind of attention at home and being able to be there for them, and to be a light for Christ, really tugged at my heart strings. I can totally see God working through me, even just on the first day, and I'm excited to see how how he uses me the rest of the week.

First full day of the mission trip. It was extremely fun, and exciting for most of the day. Our group started of the day a little earlier than everyone else, we had breakfast preparation. I didn't mind very much about waking up 30 min. earlier but, it seems like everyone else cared about getting the extra "beauty rest". Our first day at the work sites was fun. Our group was working with YouthWorks at a summer camp sort of thing. It was very funny and cool seeing all the little kids today at The Refuge, the place where we served. I was helping out with the free time and gym activities and really enjoyed that. It was filled with a lot of dodgeball, sharks and minnows, and musical chairs. I loved spending time with all the kids but there was one kid that stuck out to me the most, Ramsey. He was all over me today, piggy back rides, races, and playing fun games in "gym" class. After work we had dinner, and after that we went to the park. I played a little bit of ultimate frisbee then me and a few friends ran around in the water area. After that we had worship with water dripping down all of our clothes. Overall, today was awesome! I was amazed by how much fun I had in one day of this mission trip.

The pictures of you all loving on the kids are just precious. Knowing how special children are to Jesus, I hope you all know how much you blessed His heart! I love seeing the smiles of the Children and the equally excited smiles of the teens!!! I'm so proud of you kids! Remember that Love is what so many are longing for and you have the answer! Just keep pointing the way! We are so proud of all of you! ❤
